In 1999 Aoshima changed their RX-7 FD3S tooling slightly by making the front fascia a separate piece. This allows them to do yet more versions. Sofar they have created kits of a Mazdaspeed GT-Concept, VeilSide Combat Models 1 and 2 and C-West, Bomex and Vertex street-racers and of a wide-bodied RE Amemiya '99.
I have added a list of links to websites of car tuners mentioned in the text at the end of this page. Links in the text refer to this list.
released in July 1999
This is a brand new kit of a brand new RX-7 version: Mazdaspeed's GT-Concept, a 1999 RX-7 type RS
brought as close to Japan GT Championship specs as is legally possible for street use. The kit is based on the familiar nr.87 kit but the body is updated and now comes with a separate front bumper and the transparent parts come with updated circular tail lights and new front light covers. Other new parts are a full Mazdaspeed GT-C Aero Kit with side and rear skirts, front airdam and high mounted rear spoiler, authentic 18in Mazdaspeed/Rays MS-01MAG wheels (satin gold colored plating), a new exhaust system (beautifully bright plated), a large oil cooler and a new steering wheel. A new set of decals offers the latest red-on-white dials (yes, that rev counter goes up to 10.000rpm, with the yellow zone starting at just over 8000rpm !) and a full set of (optional) Mazdaspeed GT-C logo's. To top it off, Aoshima added a beautiful set of the latest Bridgestone G-Grid tires. There are some useful detail pictures of a real RX-7 GT-C printed on the side of the box. |
Here is a picture of what the real RX-7 GT-C looks like, note that the kit does not contain the slotted
Aero-Bonnet. This Aero-Bonnet is available separately from Little Garage, part nr. CSP-03. Click for more info on the Mazdaspeed GT-C aerokit or the MS-01MAG wheels. |
In December 2000 Aoshima also released the Mazdaspeed RX-7 GT-C kit with the body parts painted in a bright blue metallic color. |
released in Jan 2008
In January 2008 Aoshima did a rerelease of the GT-C kit, only differences are the box art and the color of the body and aerokit parts, which are now molded in metallic blue. |
released in Oct 2006
US distributer Bluefin Corp offered a version of the original GT-C kit with an extra set of parts (frame nr. 93-07) for a lefthand drive version: door panels, lefthand drive dash, SRS steering wheel and reversed windshield wipers. |
released in Jun 2017
In Jun 2017 Aoshima added the GT-C kit to its 'The Tuned Car' series. Apart from new box art and revised instruction sheet the kit contains some new parts:
The decals are almost the same as those in previous releases: decals 21 and 22 (tax disc for windshield) are no longer on the sheet but are still mentioned on the paint scheme. Body parts, aerokit parts and E-parts are molded in white, interior and chassis parts are molded in black, MS-01MAG wheels are satin gold painted, the rear exhaust pipe and muffler are brightly plated. The spare stock wheels are now also brightly plated so the door mirror faces are ready for use. Tires are 18in Bridgestone G-Grid. |
released in Oct 2020
This is a rerelease of the 2017 GT-Concept kit. Apart from new box art the kit is identical to the previous release. |
released in Dec 2010
rereleased in May 2012
This is a limited release of the GT-Concept kit with the decals replaced by a large sheet of Itasha decals. The box-top sized decal sheet provides decals for one version plus a lot of optional items for adorning the car to your own taste with characters from the 'Working!!' manga. Apart from the decals the kit is identical to the regular GT-C release. Body parts, aerokit parts and interior are molded in white, chassis parts are molded in black, MS-01MAG wheels are satin gold painted, the rear exhaust pipe and muffler are brightly plated, the spare stock wheels are not plated. Tires are 18in Bridgestone G-Grid. |
released in June 2000
This kit is based on the same set of patterns used for the GT-Concept version and
like the GT-Concept it is an accurate representation of a car tuner's special. It comes with a new front bumper, aerokit, rear wing and door mirrors and a brightly chromed big-bore exhaust pipe. Wheels in this kit are a set of satin plated 18in Andrew Racing V wheels with separate brightly plated rims and very nice copies of the latest style Pirelli P-Zero tires. The wheels differ a bit from the actual Marriott wheels, if this bothers you Fujimi does a very good set of VeilSide Marriott replacement wheels. The kit depicts the Combat Model 1 version, based on the early type FD3S with square tail lights and Enfini badges on the rear end. |
There are no pictures of the real car on the side of the box this time, I borrowed the picture of the real car on the right from the announcement on the Aoshima web site. More pics and info on VeilSide body kits can be found on the VeilSide web sites. |
In December 2000 Aoshima also released the VeilSide RX-7 kit with the body parts painted in a brownish titanium metallic color. |
released in February 2013
rereleased in November 2016
In February 2013 Aoshima released the VeilSide RX-7 kit again, this time with new box art and a new catalog number. The instruction sheet was revised as well, but the kit parts are unchanged. Body and VeilSide aerokit parts are molded in silver-gray, chassis and interior parts are molded in black. The wheels are satin plated with separate brightly plated rims and a small sprue with muffler, exhaust tip and door mirror faces is also brightly plated. |
released in March 2023
In March 2023 Aoshima included the VeilSide RX-7 kit in the Tuned Car series, updating the kits contents to the current standard by adding:
The remaining parts of the kit are the same as in earlier releases, down to the nice Pirelli P-Zero tires. Zero Paints color Pale Burnt Metal (nr. ZP-M1008) with a gloss clear topcoat is a good match for the VeilSide body color. |
released in June 2001
This is the same VeilSide kit as the ones listed above, but this time the body parts and the skirts
and spoilers are molded in a type of plastic that changes color with the angle of view (similar to the effects
of prismatic 'flip-flop' paints). Note that the body parts in this kit are not painted ! The idea is great, but the actual result is let down by dark mold lines running along the roof and engine cover and by the translucency of the plastic. The translucency can be countered by painting the insides of the body with a dark color, but parts like the rear wing have to remain translucent. If you want to paint the model yourself, GSI Creos (Gunze Sangyo) sells Maziora paint: CM-04 'Trapezium' is the same shade as the body parts of this kit, but note that this paint is expensive at 2000 Yen for 18ml. New parts in this kit are an optional set of dark tinted clear parts which come in addition to the regular clear parts. |
released in October 2001
This kit is an updated version of the VeilSide Combat Model 1 kit. New parts for this update are a new nose cone with new clear indicator lenses, a new raised rear wing, new door mirrors, a new steering wheel and a new set of decals. On the right is a small picture I found on the Aoshima website, showing a real FD with the full VeilSide Combat II aerokit fitted. This kit is a good starting point if you want to create the car that stars in the movie The Fast and the Furious which was basically a '93 FD fitted with a VeilSide Combat II aerokit and a seriously uprated engine. On the outside the main differences between this kit and the movie car are the wild paint scheme, recessed Amemiya headlights, old style tail lights and 18in VeilSide Andrew Racing efF wheels, none of which are included in this kit. Other parts required for this conversion are a LHD dash, a set of Apex gauges, Sparco racing harnesses and a new VeilSide steering wheel and aluminum shift knob. The wheels are available separately from Fujimi (Parts Maker Wheel series nr.2, cat.nr. 19210), the LHD interior and the recessed headlights can be found in the revised Bomex kit (the headlights were also made by Little Garage, cat.nr. CSP-07). |

I borrowed the picture of the real car from www.jdmconnection.com , the owner of which sold this car (the actual car used in the movie) in July 2001 on eBay !
Since the jdmconnection website went offline, I put some details and pictures of the car on a separate page. Decalshop.ru makes a decal set for the graphics of the Fast and Furious car. |

rereleased in June 2013
Yet another new RX-7 FD3S Tuner Special, this time done by Japanese tuner C-West. This is quite a hot looking car with recessed headlights, raised competition-style rear wing and an impressive spoiler kit. Body and cabin interior parts are molded in white, chassis parts are molded in black, the stock wheels are satin plated and there's five sets of new parts added:
| |
For the 2013 rerelease only the box art and the instruction sheet were changed slightly.
Here's a peek at a full-size C-West FD3S RX-7, more can be found at the Japanese C-West website. |
released in Oct 2006
US distributer Bluefin Corp offered a version of the original C-West kit with an extra set of parts (frame nr. 93-07) for a lefthand drive version: door panels, lefthand drive dash, SRS steering wheel and reversed windshield wipers. |
released in July 2021
Compared to the original kit, this rerelease contains some new parts:
The new decal sheet contains all of the items of the original sheet, plus an optional set of dials on black faces, silver Mazda emblems and a choice of silver or red RX-7 emblems for the rear. |
released in June 2003
Japanese US based tuner Bomex got famous for the work they did on the cars of the
movie 'The Fast and the Furious', in particular the bright orange Toyota Supra.
Bomex also made quite a few bits for the RX-7 FD, so Aoshima added this Bomex tuned FD to their range. Body and cabin interior parts are molded in white, chassis parts are molded in black, the stock wheels are not plated this time, but a sheet chromed plastic film is included for the mirrors (which are on the same parts tree as the stock wheels are). The body once again has a separate front bumper, taillights are of the late circular type. A set of clear parts is included with the C-West recessed headlight covers but these are not used (the lower part of the headlight assemblies is not included, these can be found in the Wing Parts vol.1) set. The kit contains the following new parts:

released in June 2003
Apart from the regular RX-7 FD Bomex release, there is also a special limited edition made of this kit
with a paint scheme that looks like the Supra in the movie 'The Fast and the Furious'. Differences between the regular RX-7 FD Bomex release and this one are:
|
The model does not match the picture on the Aoshima website (which I copied here) but instead does look like the US version that can be found on the Bomex US website. The Racing Hart CR wheels fitted to the car on this picture are available separately from Aoshima. |
released in November 2004
This is an improved version of the Bomex Special Edition kit, on the outside of the box the changed boxart and the new catalog number are apparent,
on the inside the news is much more spectacular. Compared to the first release the following parts are added:
Body, interior and aerokit parts are molded in metallic orange, chassis parts are molded in black, the factory wheels are not plated, but the 5-spoke TRD wheels are satin aluminum plated. Both decal sheets are the same as those in the first release. Two of the most sought after options (Amemiya style headlights and lefthand drive interior) in a single kit should make this kit the RX-7 FD kit you'll definitely want to get ! |
released in September 2013
For the 2013 rerelease the box art and the instruction sheet were changed slightly. Body, interior and aerokit parts are now molded in white and the tree with the factory wheels and door mirrors is again not plated. To make up for the unplated door mirrors, a fairly large sheet of self-adhesive 'chrome' foil is included, the rest of the kit was not changed. |
released in March 2022
Apart from changes to the box art and the instruction sheet, changes were also made to the contents of the kit compared to the previous release:
Tires are again 18in G-Grid. Body, interior and aerokit parts are molded in white, interior and chassis parts are molded in black, the tree with the TRD wheels is satin plated and the trees holding the Bomex exhaust and the factory wheels and door mirrors are brightly plated. |
released in March 2004
Another hot FD tuner special, this box is really packed with parts. Quite a number of the parts are marked as 'not used' but this offers a nice opportunity to customize the kit yourself.
The body once again has a separate front bumper and this time it also has venting slots in the bonnet. The kit does not contain the 18in Yokohama AVS Model5 wheels that are shown on the pictures on the box, but instead contains the same type 18in Advan RG wheels that can also be found in the C-West kit. The kit contains the following new parts:
Body and aerokit parts are molded in bright yellow, interior parts and wheels are molded in white and chassis parts are molded in black, the wheels are not plated. Taillights are of the late circular type. A set of clear parts is included with the C-West recessed headlight covers but these are not used (the lower part of the C-West headlight assemblies is not included, these can be found in the Wing Parts vol.1) set). A set of decals is included with license plates, dials and Car Make T&E and parts maker logos plus a separate sheet of carbon weave print for the bonnet and the rear wing. |

released in December 2011
This is a modified rerelease of the Vertex FD tuner special. Most obvious change are the new 19in Volks RE30 wheels fitted with Pirelli P7000 tires which replace the 18in Advan RG wheels of the previous release. As the new wheels have bushings instead of axle stubs, an additional set of chassis parts is included to accept these wheels, these chassis parts are the same as those in the RX-7 FD3S in the Drift Machine Series.
In addition to the new wheels and the new chassis parts, the kit contains all parts of the previous release.
Body and aerokit parts are molded in bright red, the interior parts and the alternate chassis parts on the E and F-trees are molded in white and chassis parts are molded in black, the RE30 wheels are satin plated, the exhaust parts are brightly plated.
A set of decals is included with license plates, dials and Car Make T&E and parts maker logos. The parts maker logos are now printed in silver and white (the decals in the previous release came with black logos). The separate sheet of carbon weave print is no longer included.
A set of pre-cut masks for the inside edges of the windows is now included.
released in October 2016
This is a rerelease of the same kit that was in the S-package Ver.R series.
The parts are identical to those in the previous release, the only differences are in the box top, instruction sheet and decals.
Body and aerokit parts are molded in bright red, the interior parts, the alternate chassis parts on the E and F-trees and the original chassis parts are molded in black and the RE30 wheels are satin plated, the exhaust parts are brightly plated.
A set of decals is included with license plates, dials and Car Make T&E and parts maker logos. This time the parts maker logos for the sides of the car are printed in black (just like those in the first release, the decals in the previous release came with silver colored logos), no carbon weave print decals are included.
A set of pre-cut masks for the inside edges of the windows is included.
released in December 2019
Another rerelease of the Vertex kit, apart from new box art and some subtle changes to the instruction sheet, this release is identical to the 2016 'The Tuned Car series' release.
Body and aerokit parts are molded in bright red, the interior parts, the alternate chassis parts on the E and F-trees and the original chassis parts are all molded in black. The RE30 wheels and the exhaust parts are brightly plated.
The decals for the parts maker logos for the sides of the car are again printed in black.
A set of pre-cut masks for the inside edges of the windows is included.

rereleased in July 2021
This kit was announced as a rerelease of the RE Amemiya FD3S RX-7 kit, but ended up as more of an improved version of the RE Amemiya GReddy D1 7 2004 Ver. kit instead. The updated single-piece wide body that was introduced with the Initial D Vol.28 kit now replaces the old wide body that came with separate side moldings. Compared to the RE Amemiya FD3S RX-7 kit, the following new parts are included:
| |
The tree with stock seats, door panels and aerokit was deleted. The instruction sheet has been revised and now offers a choice of fitting either the 2005 front fascia with flush headlights, or the 2004 one with separate recessed headlights. The diffuser from the I tree is now used, but the race style diffuser is still included on the F-2 tree. The instructions no longer mention the option of fitting a stock interior, but most parts required are still in the kit (apart from stock seats and door panels), including the semi-roll cage. Wheels are 18in Enkei RP03 fitted with Bridgestone G'Grid tires. A new decal set and a set of window paint masks complete this release, paint masks for the borders of the headlight covers are also included. In addition to 'RE Amemiya' and sponsor decals, the decal set offers a choice of white and black instrument faces and Enfini and Mazda badges. No carbon print decals are provided. Body and aerokit parts are molded in bright blue, interior and chassis parts are molded in black, stock wheels are not plated, Enkei wheels are satin aluminum plated and the tree with exhaust pipe and mirror faces is brightly plated. Images of an actual car of similar specs can be found on the RE Amemiya website. |

This kit represents the RX-7 FD as Keisuke Takahashi drives it in the first volume of the Initial-D books.
This is the first 1/24 scale RX-7 FD ever to feature a choice of raised head lights. As the raised head light parts are on small separate trees it is unknown if these will be added to other Aoshima RX-7 FD kits.
The kit is based on the RX-7 FD Type IV kit with a lot of extra parts added.
Aoshima added new 'I', 'J', 'K' and 'L' trees, included the 'H' tree from the RE Amemiya GReddy D1 7 racer kit and added a new rear muffler, new wheels, new decals and a set of masks for the insides of the front and rear windows.
The 'I' tree is molded in yellow and contains parts for the raised head lights.
The 'J' tree is molded in yellow and contains parts for the large rear wing.
The 'K' tree is molded in white and contains a steering wheel and spares.
The 'L' tree is molded in clear and contains lenses for the raised head lights.
New 18in wheels are simply referred to as 'aluminum wheels' but resemble Mazdaspeed MS-01 wheels and are fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tires.
As is often the case with recent Aoshima releases, this kit contains a lot of spare parts.
Apart from the usual spare parts (a set of wheels, a set of suspension parts, a set of front seats, three steering wheels), the tree from the D1 racer offers an unused full roll cage, bare inner door panels, racing dashboard and drift style hand brake lever.
The new decals offer 'Initial-D' license plates, 'Red Suns' and sponsor logos for the sides, silver Enfini badges, a choice of silver or red 'RX-7 Enfini' badges for the rear and a choice of black or white instrument faces.

A set of paint masks for the windows is included. Decals are identical to the decals from the Vol.1 version kit. This kit stands out among the other tuned RX-7's in this series because it can be made to represent the actual race car that was used to win the Japanese 2003 D1 (drift race) Championship.
The kit contains all of the parts of the Vertex kit listed above apart from:
Body, aerokit and interior parts are molded in white, the optional Bride seats are molded in red and chassis parts are molded in black, the wheels and exhaust pipe are brightly plated.
The large set of decals contains all markings for making either the actual race car or a street legal replica. The silver and gold colored lettering is well represented,
but the red lettering on the real race car is also a metallic color whereas the decals are non-metallic red.
The box top shows a nice picture of the race car in action, the side of the box shows some very useful front, rear and side views of the race car.

This is a rerelease of the same kit that was in the S-package Ver.R series.
Only differences are the box top, the instruction sheet and the kit name on the decal sheet. The instruction sheet now comes with more info on the Japanese 2003 D1 (drift race) Championship and a greyscale picture of the real car.
Apart from the kit name in the lower righthand corner, the decal sheet is identical to the earlier release, it is still printed in non-metallic red. |
